A fun, free way to RV, boondocking is skipping the designated campgrounds and staying without hookups, whether that be in a big-box store parking lot or immersed in nature on Crown Land. Wherever you choose, research the regional rules first.
Crown Land camping
Canadian property owners may camp at no cost on Crown Land for up to 21 days a year at each location. These areas tend to be remote and may have nothing in the way of RV infrastructure. Crown Land is regulated provincially, so check out provincial government sites to find a map of where to find it.
Recreation sites
Provincial recreation sites and non-operating parks offer a more structured off-the-grid experience than Crown Land — occasionally with basic facilities, but still expecting you to be self-sufficient.
Rest areas and truck stops
Not the quietest places to stay the night, but truck stops and rest areas are a convenient overnight break on a long drive. Check the signage permits overnight parking, and pick somewhere well lit.
Parking lots at shopping malls or big-box stores
Major retailers such as Walmart frequently permit overnight RV parking at the back of the lot. Look for a sign or ask the manager before you settle in.
Boondocking in town
Municipal parking restrictions vary considerably, and RV-specific parking rules are not stated on parking signs but are still enforced — so check the city’s website before you park for the night.
