I was sceptical about e-bikes at first. They seemed to be everywhere in the high-end shops, and cycling in North America has come a long way from a thing children did in the street to a sophisticated sport with its own heroes. Then I rode one.
Core technology
Powertrain. The motor sits either in a wheel hub or beside the pedals. Mid-drive motors are used on higher end models, because the connection to the drivetrain makes the power delivery smoother and better controlled. Motor power runs from 250 to 750+ watts, fed by a lithium-ion battery measured in watt-hours.
Range. It depends on the battery capacity, the motor, the terrain, the rider’s weight and how much assistance you ask for — typically 20 to over 100 miles on a single charge.

Regulations and cost

Drawbacks: the cost of replacing a battery, maintenance issues on cheaper models, the weight compared with an ordinary bicycle, and less exercise per kilometre.
Benefits: cheaper than commuting by car, genuinely practical in a city, environmentally friendly, able to carry cargo, and the exercise is adjustable rather than absent.
